When I made the decision to stay at home with my twin boys, we knew there would be financial hardship. I was a full time teacher of science and department chairperson. That meant we were giving up a pretty good salary so that I could be the sole care provider for my children. It was not too long into my time as a stay at home that we realized we needed some supplemental income. We tightened our belts but it still was not enough to pay for our expenses and the added preschool expense. I then began in earnest a search to find out how to work from home. I have to say that at first I found more scams than honest work. Here are some of the ways that I’ve used to make sure I bring in $150 to $250 a week.

The first thing I did was open an eBay store. I had twins and with two of everything I knew it would feel good to clean out some of the stuff I had accumulated. A great deal of the stuff I had was new or very gently used. Piece by piece, toy by toy, I started selling. I also worked at a toy warehouse three times a year that sold discontinued new toys. I started purchasing them at a closeout price and listing them on eBay as well. After six months I had earned over $1,500 or roughly $250 a month. I am still selling on eBay and I can say that after profiting this much I will never have another garage sale again. I am now looking at making this a part time job.

I also began to look into writing. I had always been a decent writer, even though science was my major field of study and career aspiration. I found many sites likeYahoo Voices, Helium, Hubpages that would publish my work and sometimes earn me upfront pay or sometimes revenue shares. I also discovered content mills like Textbroker and iWriter where you write for a price. I enjoy writing at night when the twins are asleep and I can collect my thoughts. On average from all of the writing sites I was averaging about $100 a month.

Then I stumbled onto freelancing sites where you can look for more permanent work and search by the type of specialty that you are interested in. The two best sites that I have worked with are oDesk and eLance. These two sites have allowed me to find more projects than I can handle. I have completed two very large projects that dealt with science education on oDesk and then picked up a gigantic one on eLance just this week. These projects are perfect for me as a science teacher and keep me engaged and happy about the work I do. I am averaging $600 a month on these sites to date.

I like to have little supplemental income so I have signed up for surveys and ejury sites. My favorite two survey sites (that are very reputable) are SurveyClub Research and Pinecone. I usually get between 5-10 surveys a month and I usually earn about $30 a month from them. I have only served on two online juries but they paid $50 each time. On average I pull in $30 a month from this type of work.

Finally, I’m a teacher after all. I have signed up at several online tutoring sites. My favorite is one that matches me up with tutees based on the subjects I feel most comfortable teaching. Wyzant has helped me to find a number of tutoring jobs for high school students. This is the only job I have to travel outside the home, but I am earning $80-$120 a month doing this work.

It is not impossible to find work. I do feel that sometimes it is hard to keep them all going and sometimes I let one slow down when others get busy. In all, I am now able to productively stay at home with my kids and earn enough to pay for their preschool and supplement our income.

2. Take an Exam

I know I’ve already mentioned this point…but one funny thing I’ve realized is that sometimes people take a point more seriously when it is put in its own heading. So, go ahead and take an exam.

3. Add a Portfolio

This is another important part of your profile. Make sure you have a great portfolio. For example, if you are a writer, no matter how confident you are in yourself, allow someone else to check out some of your favorite articles and let them inform you which ones would best fit into your portfolio. In short, put a lot of thought into what you add to your portfolio.

4. Don’t Quit Your Job First

Whether you do a day job or are a freelancer in other platforms such as iWriter, Freelancer etc., don’t quit first. This is because you don’t want to get into Elance totally hungry and desperate. It is better to join this site when you already have something else running but want to up your game.

5. Send Numerous Proposals

Elance gives you 40 free Connects per month. Most proposals will cost you one Connect. Therefore, make sure you use all your 40 Connects each month. I advise you do 2 proposals a day but give careful thought of what you put in your proposal. Make sure you put something professional and persuasive in each.

6. Don’t Start Too Small

Whenever I advise people to join Freelancer, I tell them to start small.

The same advice goes for Elance. However, one factor to consider is the fact that you’ll be dealing with professionals who will also expect you to be professional.

A very low bid may show desperation and some people may not choose your proposal, fearing you are not serious, you give low quality work, you don’t respect deadlines or just have some hidden flaw that is making you bid so low.

7. Ask for Escrow or Use WorkView

This is self-explanatory. To protect your payments, make sure you ask your clients to fund anescrow for fixed price jobs. For hourly jobs, it is hard to get scammed so just use their Tracker and send accurate timesheets in good time. I always warn freelancers not to work outside Elance or any other site for that matter since working outside will get you less protected and make it easy for you to get conned (take it from me, I was conned off a lot of cash this way when I was still green in online business).

8. Have a Brilliant Proposal

Don’t just wake up and do a proposal.

Make sure your proposal is well thought out. Feel free to bounce it off someone else to make sure its convincing enough to the clients. Note that this is one of the most important parts that will enable you to get good jobs.

9. Always Use a Sample

This is sort of an unwritten rule in all freelancing websites; Elance is no exception.

Make sure you use your best samples when you send out proposals. For example, if you are a graphic designer, use 2 or 3 of your favorite graphics.

A little secret that always works for me is I choose a sample that fits the client’s niche. If the client wants a writer to do weight loss articles, I pick 1-3 of my best weight loss articles and use them as my samples.

10. Be Patient

Patience is a virtue that many people don’t possess. We love sites like iWriter where you get in now, write a quick article and get paid.

Unfortunately, all quick things have their flaws e.g. iWriter will keep banning you and it has the highest rejection rate compared to other freelancing sites. Additionally, there are many times when there are no articles in the queue for you to write, therefore wasting your time and potential earnings.

On the other hand, if you land an Elance job like the ones I have, you have a guaranteed number of articles that you can write per day and ALL of them get accepted depending on how much your clients believe in your work

In short, be very patient in Elance. Note that even experts sometimes send proposals for weeks before they get their first jobs. The good thing is that when you start getting jobs there, you can easily forget about other sites.

$500 Per Month Plan for Freelancers in Elance

I’ll use the example of writers.

From my personal experience, there are many clients in Elance who are willing to pay between $4 and $8 per article. Therefore, you can use $4-$8 as your minimum proposal amount.

Once you get your $5 per 500 words job, make sure you write 5 articles a day. Assuming you work 5 days a week, that will give you $25 per day, meaning $125 per week and $500 per month.

And that is how you can make $500 per month on Elance.

Of course you should strive to work more than 5 days and do more than 5 articles per day. Additionally, always deliver quality work, otherwise, none of the above will work.

Bonus Tips

You can link your Payoneer card to Elance and use it to withdraw Elance cash for negligible fees. Since Payoneer is the best withdrawal method from online sites, make sure you take advantage of this.

Some clients may ask you to print and sign some Non-Disclosure Agreements or other contracts then upload them. These are the best clients there so don’t hesitate to do this.

Unlike Freelancer, you can withdraw your cash any day. The Payoneer card (or Elance card) requires a minimum of $20 USD per withdrawal but if you have the card and want to withdraw smaller figures, you can still withdraw to PayPal and then withdraw from PayPal to your US Payment Service by Payoneer. Never leave your day job or other freelancing jobs till you’ve secured one or two good clients on Elance.

In freelancing, never depend on one site only; make sure you still work on other sites such as Fiverr and iWriter, just to make sure you have backup earnings.

Avoid writing unpaid samples – unless the client requires one general one. For example, if a client asks you to write a sample on “5 Foods That Kill Fat”, turn it down since they may use it and never pay you for it.  But if they say, “Give me a 300 word sample on any topic so that I can see your writing skills”, feel free to give them that sample.

Step 2 

Wait till the price goes down to, for example, 1.38640.

Step 3 

Close the trade.  You have bought one lot of EUR back at  the new price – 1.38640. With the leverage of 1:100 you needed only USD 1386.4 of your own funds.

Step 4

 Calculate your profit: You gained $4740 – the difference between the sell and purchase prices for one lot of EUR/USD. Not too bad for 4 days, isn’t it? This is how you can profit from the currency rate drops on the forex market.

2. The price goes up

To get an idea of how to earn on forex when prices go up, let’s consider another example. Suppose, the euro is about to rise:

Step 1 

Buy 1 lot of EUR/USD at 1.38640. You will only need  USD 1286.4 (remember about leverage!).

Step 2 

Wait till the price goes up to reach the level of, for example, 1.40620.

Step 3 

Close the trade. (You are technically selling EUR 100 000)

Step 4 

Thus, within just a few hours we have earned $ 1 980 (the difference in the value of the contract given that the price rose from 1.38640  to 1.40620). Both examples show how much profit an experienced forex trader can make.

We've left this method for last because, quite frankly, it's not one we recommend. This method involves creating pay-per-click campaigns through search engines like Google and Bing, and promoting the merchant website directly through your affiliate link.

So instead of using PPC to promote your own website, you send them straight to the merchant.

There are a number of downsides to this method.

1. First, with Google's AdWords in particular, there will only be one paid listing for a particular website displayed at any given time. This means that instead of competing against other advertisers for one of eight spots on the page, you're competing for just one spot. If you bid a large amount and write an attractive ad then you might see your ad displayed, otherwise you can forget it.
2. Secondly, you have no control over the quality of the merchant page. Increasingly the search engines are looking at the page you're promoting and deciding whether this offers a good experience for their users. If the merchant site has little content, or poor quality content, you could end up paying a much higher amount for your advertisements.

There are always new affiliates who see this as a fast and easy way to get started, but we really recommend that you try the other methods we've introduced first.
